Storm watch
Mersh standing in a flooded room during a hurricane, in a bathrobe with a cigarette and his dark glasses, a bottle of Red Breast in one hand and a rifle in the other. Cats ride both shoulders and a third sits on top of the refrigerator smoking. A television on the counter carries a STORM WATCH graphic, a carton of MOO JUICE floats past his shins, and an alligator has got in at the lower left.
Symmetrical and frontal, with Mersh dead centre and the flood running the full width beneath him. The television closes the left edge and the refrigerator the right, like wings, and a band of solid black scribble seals the top, so the eye is held in the lit middle.
Hot orange and acid yellow through the refrigerator and the right-hand wall against cold violet and slate in the water and the robe. The whisky label is the one pure red in the sheet.
Pen line throughout, hatched and worked densely, with transparent washes laid over it and left to blotch. The flood is drawn as loose horizontal strokes rather than modelled, and the darks at the top are solid scribble rather than wash.
Watercolour and ink on paper.
Signed rayrayisHAPPY at the lower right, with the date 101024 at the upper right.
