Sergeant Bucket
A cat in field uniform drawn as a Vietnam-era soldier: boonie hat with a pack of American Spirits tucked into the band and a spade playing card in the brim, a cigarette in its mouth, dog tags at the throat, a BUCKET nametape on the jacket and an A 306 lightning-bolt patch beside it. The roundel is lettered Hello Darkness, My Old Friend.
A circular device built head-on and nearly symmetrical, the hat brim cutting across the top third and the shoulders filling the base. Bare branches are drawn behind the figure to break the solid black and keep the ring from closing flat.
Black ink on white. No colour.
Fine pen throughout with the fur built from short directional strokes and the uniform carried on crisper outline, so the animal and the kit read as different materials. The black behind is laid flat and the whiskers are reserved out of it.
Ink on paper, drawn as artwork for reproduction.
Signed RAYRAYISHAPPY within the ring at the upper right.
