Seascapes — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

Two watercolour studies on a sketchbook page — a cold night seascape with a wave breaking under a dark sky, and a warm open range running back to blue hills.
Both are wide horizontals stacked one above the other, and both are built entirely from bands. The upper study is almost all water; the lower gives its top third to a pale sky and fills everything below with ground.
The upper study is ultramarine and indigo with one hot seam of magenta and scarlet where the light breaks. The lower is its opposite — ochre, gold and olive, with violet only in the far hills.
Laid in long horizontal pulls of loaded colour, wet against wet, so each band bleeds into the next. The lower study is finished with dry dark scribbles of grass stamped across the foreground.
Watercolour in a spiral-bound sketchbook, two studies on one page, dated in pencil. A studio photograph of a page rather than a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
