Seascapes — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

A watercolour sunset reduced to five horizontal bands — gold above, then apricot, a cold lavender sea, a violet reef and a warm shore — with no object in it anywhere.
Pure horizontal registers filling the sheet, ruled faintly in pencil at the right margin. There is no focal point and nothing to measure scale by; the picture is the order of the bands.
Cadmium yellow and gold at the top dropping through apricot and sienna, against a band of cold periwinkle, then plum and a return to gold at the foot.
Each band is one flooded pass left to dry at its own edge, with the pigment allowed to settle and granulate. Nothing is lifted, reserved or corrected; the only drawing is the pencil border.
Watercolour on paper in a sketchbook.
No signature visible within the painted area.
