Seascapes — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

A wave breaking under a heavy sky, the lip just turning over and a band of green water running out to the right.
Three registers, each a flat band: cloud above, the wave and its dark shelf across the middle, green shallows below. The wave's crest is the only curve in a picture otherwise built of horizontals.
Plum, violet and mulberry through the cloud, laid in one continuous wet passage. The wave is near-black with a single emerald face; the shallows are a bright acid green.
The sky is flooded wet-in-wet and left to granulate, with no drawn edge anywhere. The shallows below are stroked in long horizontal pulls that let the paper break through, and the wave is one dark shape laid over dry paint.
Watercolour on paper, 5 × 7 in. — read off the Fabriano block. Transparent throughout, the whites all reserved paper.
No signature visible within the painted area.
