Seascapes — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

Two waves standing up in sequence, the nearer one about to break, seen from the side with the sun somewhere behind the cloud above.
The waves run across the lower half as two long diagonals, the second smaller and further left. Above them the sky is banded horizontally, so the curves of the water are the only movement.
Ultramarine and indigo in the wave bodies with two small notes of emerald where the light comes through. The sky and the foreground water are a warm khaki and ochre — unusual, and it makes the blues read cold.
The wave faces are single curved loaded strokes with their shapes left as the brush made them; the foam is reserved paper. The water in front is drawn in long horizontal pulls that skip across the grain.
Watercolour on paper, 5 × 7 in. — the Fabriano block's label is legible beneath. Transparent throughout.
Lower right, raypatrick, in dark brown over the water, letters touching.
