Seascapes, Surfing — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

A woman in a straw hat lying face down on a longboard on flat green water, paddling with one hand, in a blue painted frame.
The board runs corner to corner on a diagonal and the figure lies along it. There is no horizon, no shore and no sky — the whole picture is water seen from directly above.
Viridian, teal and cobalt through the water with the board in bone and a crimson rail. The figure is cadmium orange and gold, set against the green as a direct complementary.
The water is built from hundreds of short dark horizontal strokes over a wet ground so the surface reads as choppy, and the board is painted round rather than reserved. The rail is one unbroken line.
Watercolour on paper, in a blue painted wood frame.
Lower right, raypatrick, in pale letters widely spaced along the edge.
