Seascapes, Surfing — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

A surfer in a teal rash vest riding the open face of a wave, seen from above and behind, with the lip breaking white across the top of the sheet.
The wave face runs corner to corner as one long diagonal and the figure stands at its centre. There is no horizon, no sky and no shore — the whole sheet is the face of the wave.
Cobalt, turquoise and violet through the water, with the foam left as bare paper. The figure carries the only warm colour in the picture — teal vest, sienna limbs, black hair.
Washed wet into wet so the blues shade into one another without an edge, with the foam reserved rather than lifted and the figure put in last in a few opaque touches.
Watercolour on paper in a sketchbook, with a ruled pencil border.
No signature visible within the painted area.
