Seascapes, Surfing — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

A woman stepping down over wet rocks with a striped longboard under her arm, seen from behind, the sea opening beyond her.
The figure and board run on a diagonal from the upper left to the lower right and together they take almost the whole study. The rocks fill the foreground and the water is reduced to a band across the top.
Teal and viridian in the water against rocks in umber and sienna. The board carries the brightest colour on the sheet — cadmium orange, rose and a hard crimson rail.
The rocks are flooded and allowed to granulate into one another, and the board is laid over them in flat opaque bands with the rail drawn last in one unbroken stroke.
Watercolour on paper, with a ruled pencil border. A studio photograph of a page with further studies around it.
No signature legible at this scale.
