Seascapes, Surfing — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

A woman carrying a surfboard and a red bag down a grass verge toward the water, seen from behind, with a headland closing the bay beyond.
The study is ruled as a horizontal and the figure stands at the right, cropped at the board. The bands of the picture — sea, far shore, verge, path — run level behind her and she is the only vertical.
Turquoise and jade through the water against a verge of emerald and chartreuse. The red bag is the single hot note and sits almost exactly at the centre of the sheet.
Transparent and quick, the water laid in two flooded passes with the far shore dropped in wet, and the figure built from a few opaque touches over dry paint.
Watercolour on paper in a sketchbook, with a ruled pencil border. A studio photograph of a page with further studies around it.
Upper right of the study, in pencil, indistinct at this scale.
