Seascapes, Surfing — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

A woman in a dark jacket seen from behind and above, bare-legged, picking her way down a rocky path toward the water with a board under her arm.
Seen steeply from above so there is no horizon at all. The figure runs on a diagonal from the upper right, legs crossing at the centre of the sheet, and the path and its long shadows carry the eye down to the lower left.
Olive, umber and sage through the ground with the path in bone and lilac. The jacket is a dense ultramarine and is the only saturated colour in the picture; the legs are a pale rose.
Pen first and wash after, the line left visible everywhere and the colour dropped inside it without registering exactly with the edges. The cast shadows are single transparent strokes over dry paint.
Watercolour with pen and ink on paper.
No signature visible within the painted area.
