Seascapes, Surfing — oil painting by Ray Patrick

Two surfers riding the same wave at dusk, the nearer one standing tall with her arms raised, the second further out with arms spread for balance.
The wave runs from the lower left to the right edge and the two figures are set well apart along it, large and small, which does all the work of distance. The sky above is empty and takes the upper half.
Lilac, dove and pale rose through the sky and spray — unusually soft for this group — against teal and bottle green in the wave. The two figures carry the only warm flesh notes.
The water is laid in broad soft planes with their edges allowed to meet rather than cut, and the spray is scumbled so the colour beneath shows. The figures are modelled in a few strokes with no outline.
Oil on canvas board. Moderately loaded, the weave visible at the margins; photographed on a book of small paintings by Mau-Kun Yim.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in blue over the water, letters widely spaced.
