Seascapes, Surfing — oil painting by Ray Patrick

A long low wave running in toward a wooded point, with a single surfer standing on it in orange and the water opening wide on both sides.
The wave runs the full width as one horizontal mass just below centre, and the surfer stands almost exactly in the middle of it — the only incident in a very open picture. The headland closes the upper right.
Teal and ultramarine through the water with the wave's crest in cream and pale yellow. The cloud above is lilac and rose; the surfer is a single stroke of cadmium orange, the only warm note.
The crest is laid in thick dragged strokes with the knife, standing well off the surface. The water is stroked horizontally beneath it, and the surfer is three marks with no drawing.
Oil on canvas board. Heavy impasto along the wave; the board's edges are unpainted canvas and it is photographed resting on an easel ledge.
Lower left, raypatrick, in cream over the water, letters touching.
