Seascapes, Surfing — oil painting by Ray Patrick

A woman riding a small wave on a longboard, arms out, seen from behind, under a great bank of white cumulus.
The horizon sits just below centre with the cloud taking the upper half and the water the lower. The figure stands left of centre on the wave line, her reflection running straight down beneath her.
Cerulean and cobalt through the sky and sea with the cloud in bone, lilac and dove. The figure is sienna in a dark suit — the only warm note in an otherwise entirely blue picture.
The cloud is built from loaded square-ended strokes stacked rather than modelled, and the water laid in long horizontal pulls. The figure is six or seven touches with the board one white stroke.
Oil on canvas paper with an unpainted margin. Photographed on the easel.
Lower right, raypatrick, scratched into the wet paint.
