Sunsets, Seascapes — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

A pier at sunset seen almost end-on from the sand, its deck running up to the right and its pilings casting long reflections on the wet beach.
One strong diagonal carries the pier from the lower left to the upper right and divides the picture; the sky fills the triangle above and the wet sand the triangle below. The reflections repeat the pilings downward.
Scarlet and cadmium orange in horizontal cloud bands, with teal and cobalt breaking through above and yellow at the horizon. The pier is burnt umber and near-black; the sand throws the sky's colour back warmer.
The sky is laid in long horizontal strokes of unmixed colour, each separate, so red sits directly against blue. The pilings are drawn into wet paint with the brush point and bleed slightly at their feet.
Watercolour on paper, 5 × 7 in. — read off the Fabriano block. Transparent throughout.
