Sunsets, Seascapes — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

A sunset over low ground with a dark promontory running out to the left, a small hut on the ridge, and two palms standing at the right.
The land occupies the lower third as one unbroken dark mass with a long spit reaching left; the sky takes everything above. The tallest palm sits at the right edge and is the only thing crossing the horizon.
Scarlet and cadmium orange in bands of cloud, going to lemon at the horizon and teal above. The land is olive and deep aubergine, and carries no colour of its own.
The cloud bands are laid wet-in-wet and allowed to bleed into each other, then overlaid with sharper strokes once dry so the sky has both soft and hard edges. The palms are drawn last with the brush point.
Watercolour on paper, 5 × 7 in. — read off the Fabriano block in the photograph. Transparent throughout, the lights reserved as bare paper.
Lower right, raypatrick, in dark brown over the land, letters touching.
