Sunsets, Seascapes — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

A lifeguard tower in silhouette at sunset, seen from the sand below, with small figures standing along the dune in front of it.
The tower sits right of centre and the dune runs out to the left as one unbroken dark mass, taking the lower third. The sky above is open and entirely horizontal, so the tower's mast is the only vertical.
Cadmium yellow and orange along the horizon rising through scarlet to teal and violet above. The tower and dune are a deep aubergine that reads as black against the light.
The sky is flooded wet-in-wet and the cloud bars drawn into it while still live, so their edges bleed. The tower is laid over dry paint as one flat wash, its ladder and railing drawn into it with the brush point.
Watercolour on paper. Transparent throughout, the lights reserved rather than painted; worked on a Fabriano block, its label visible beneath.
Lower right, raypatrick, in dark brown over the dune, letters touching.
