Sunsets, Seascapes — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

The pier from the sand at sunset, seen from beneath and to one side, its deck and railing dark against a burning sky.
The pier enters at the right and runs away to the left, falling as it goes, so the deck makes a long diagonal across the upper half. The pilings beneath it stand as a rhythm of verticals, closely spaced near and widening as they recede.
Cadmium yellow at the horizon rising through orange and scarlet to violet and cobalt at the top. The pier is a deep aubergine; the wet sand below carries the sky's colours back in muted form.
Wet-in-wet in the sky, the colours flooded and allowed to run into each other with no drawn edge anywhere. The pier is laid over the dry sky as one flat dark wash, and the railing and lamp standards are drawn into it with the point of the brush.
Watercolour on paper. Transparent throughout, the lights reserved rather than painted, and the paper's grain visible in every wash.
Lower left, raypatrick, in dark brown over the wet sand, letters touching.
