Seascapes, Sunsets — oil painting by Ray Patrick

A small oil of a reef at sunset — a flat sea with a long red rock bar across the middle and a band of orange sky above — in a black frame, lying in a packing box.
Horizontal registers throughout: sky, the sun's seam, the far water, the rock bar, the shallows. Nothing is vertical and there is no focal point; the picture is the order of the bands.
Cadmium orange and scarlet in the sky over a sea of pale blue, dove and lilac. The rock bar is a strong oxblood and is the only dark mass in the picture.
Laid in short horizontal strokes of unmixed colour shoulder to shoulder, so the gradation happens between touches rather than within them. The rock is one loaded pull dragged the width of the panel.
Oil on board, in a black frame. Photographed in a packing box with tape and paper, ready to ship.
Lower right, raypatrick, scratched into the wet paint.
