Sunsets, Seascapes — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

Sunset seen from high ground over a coastal plain, with a road running across the middle distance, green slopes in the foreground and the sea beyond.
Three registers rising in temperature from the bottom up — green slope, violet plain, burning sky. The slope cuts in from the right as a strong diagonal and the road runs the full width behind it.
Crimson, coral and salmon through the cloud going to cadmium yellow at the right, over a plain of dusty violet and mauve. The foreground is a hot sap green, laid directly against the violet with nothing between.
Flat opaque strokes with square ends, the cloud built in overlapping planes and the lit edges cut in afterwards. The green slope is dragged in long diagonal pulls that follow the fall of the land.
Gouache on paper. Matte and opaque throughout, with a white margin round the painted area. Photographed above the palette it was mixed on.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in ochre over the slope, letters widely spaced.
