Seascapes — oil painting by Ray Patrick

A small oil of water running between dark rocks at dusk, the light lying on it in broken bands, with a headland closing the distance.
Seen from above with no sky at all — the whole panel is water and rock. The dark masses enter from both sides and the lit channel runs up the middle, which is the only way into the picture.
Cobalt, lavender and bone in the water with the rocks in oxblood, umber and near-black. One band of chartreuse and lemon along the far shore is the brightest passage.
Thick and square, the water dragged in short horizontal pulls that let the darker colour beneath break through, and the rocks stamped over them as flat unmodelled masses.
Oil on canvas paper with an unpainted margin. Photographed on the studio table.
Lower left, raypatrick, scratched into the wet paint in orange.
