Seascapes — oil painting by Ray Patrick

A small oil of a green headland falling to the sea, with black rocks standing in the shallows and surf running in behind them, lying on a sheet of graphite head studies.
The headland runs across the upper third and the water fills the middle, with the two rock masses placed in the near foreground on a diagonal. There is almost no sky — a strip of lilac at the top and nothing more.
Bottle green, viridian and olive through the land and shallows, against cobalt and teal in the open water. The rocks are a near-black with indigo in their shadows.
Knife-laid and square, the rock scraped on in flat planes and the water dragged horizontally beneath it. The surf is two broken pulls of white laid last over dry colour.
Oil on canvas paper with an unpainted margin. A studio photograph lying on a sheet of graphite drawings, which are separate works.
Lower left, raypatrick, scratched into the wet paint in orange.
