Subject

A small oil of a bay with a low green headland behind, cumulus above it, and gold rocks breaking the water in the near foreground.

Composition

Four registers — sky, headland, water, rock. The cloud takes the upper half and the headland runs level beneath it; the two rock masses at the lower corners frame the water between them.

Palette

Cerulean and lilac in the sky with the cloud in bone and dove, over a headland of sap green and olive. The water is turquoise and cobalt; the rocks cadmium orange and umber.

Handling

Loaded and flat, the cloud laid in broad square-ended strokes and the water in long horizontal pulls. The rocks are the thickest paint in the panel, stamped on last.

Medium and support

Oil on canvas paper with an unpainted margin. Photographed on the studio table.

Signature

Lower right, raypatrick, scratched into the wet paint in green.
