Seascapes — oil painting by Ray Patrick

Surf breaking over a rocky shelf, seen from above and close, with wet rock in the foreground and a line of white water running across the middle.
Four horizontal registers — sky, sea, surf, reef — with the reef taking the lower half and carrying all the incident. No horizon is drawn as such; the picture is read as a sequence of bands.
Teal and emerald through the water with the surf in cream and bone. The reef is lavender, plum and olive, with two passages of rust where the rock is exposed.
Thick and knife-laid — the surf is scraped on so the colour beneath shows through its broken edges, and the rocks are flat dark planes stamped over the wet sand.
Oil on canvas board. Strong impasto throughout; photographed on a spiral sketchbook of pencil drawings, which is beneath the work rather than part of it.
Lower left, raypatrick, in red over the reef, letters touching.
