Seascapes — oil painting by Ray Patrick

A sea arch in low sun, the rock lit orange along its top and a deep shadow under the opening, with water running across the foreground.
The arch sits just right of centre and fills most of the picture, its dark opening the one deep note. The sea runs in bands across the lower third and the sky is a narrow strip at the upper left.
Cadmium orange, coral and salmon across the lit rock, against violet and plum in its shadow. The water below is teal, ultramarine and olive — cool against the whole hot upper half.
Laid almost entirely with the knife: flat planes dragged and scraped so the colour beneath shows at every edge. The paint stands well off the surface and holds its own ridges.
Oil on canvas board. Heavy impasto, the weave visible at the unpainted margins; photographed with the palette knife used on it.
Lower right, raypatrick, in white over the water, letters touching.
