Seascapes — oil painting by Ray Patrick

A stretch of beach in the late afternoon, bathers lying on towels in the foreground, a lifeguard tower at the right and surf running in behind.
Four horizontal bands — sky, sea, surf, sand — with the figures scattered along the lower third. The tower at the right edge is the only vertical and it anchors an otherwise level picture.
Steel blue and teal through the sea with cream in the surf, over sand of warm ochre and bone. The towels carry vermilion, violet and emerald in small quantities.
Thick and square, laid largely with the knife — the sand is dragged in flat planes and the figures are single loaded strokes dropped onto it. Nothing is drawn.
Oil on canvas board. Strong impasto throughout, the weave visible at the margins; photographed with the palette knife used on it.
Right of centre, raypatrick, in white over the sand, letters touching.
