Seascapes — oil painting by Ray Patrick

Four small oil panels of the same rocky coast laid out on a table — surf breaking white against dark reef, seen four times under different light.
Two rows of two. Every panel puts the horizon high, the reef across the middle, and one burst of white water as the single bright event; only its position changes from panel to panel.
The two upper panels are cool and pale — lilac, dove and olive. The two lower ones are darker and greener, with cobalt and viridian water and rocks in rust and umber.
Thick and knife-laid, the rock scraped on as flat planes and the surf stamped over it in one loaded mark of chalk white. The repetition across four panels is the point of the group.
Oil on canvas board, four panels. A studio photograph of a group of works with the brushes used, not a single picture.
Lower edge of several panels, raypatrick, scratched into the paint.
