Subject

A dark headland rock standing in the surf at dusk, with wet reef running toward the viewer and one thin seam of gold along the horizon.

Composition

The rock sits just left of centre and is the only mass in the picture; the reef below it runs back in long diagonal bands and the sky above is empty. The gold seam at the horizon is the only hard line.

Palette

Lavender, pewter and dove through the water and sky, with the rock and reef in near-black and bottle green. One stroke of cadmium yellow at the horizon and a flash of viridian in the breaking wave are the only saturated notes.

Handling

Thick and loaded, the wet sand dragged in long horizontal pulls that let the colour beneath show through, and the rocks stamped over them as flat dark planes. The sky is scraped thin so the weave reads through it.

Medium and support

Oil on canvas board. Photographed standing in a wooden display stand.

Signature

No signature visible within the painted area.
