Seascapes — oil painting by Ray Patrick

A flat-topped headland standing out into the sea, with lines of surf running in across the shallows and wet sand in the foreground.
Horizontal registers throughout — sky, headland, open water, three bands of surf, wet sand. The headland is the only mass and it sits high and left; everything below it is parallel to the frame.
A flat cerulean sky over a headland of ochre, olive and umber. The water runs cobalt and teal with the surf in chalk white; the wet sand below is lavender and dove.
Thick and horizontal, each band one loaded pull of the knife or brush, with the surf laid as broken white strokes dragged across the colour beneath. The headland is a single flat slab with its detail stamped on top.
Oil on canvas paper with an unpainted margin. Photographed on the studio table with the painting knife used.
Lower left, raypatrick, scratched into the wet paint in blue.
