Seascapes — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

A hazy coastal view from above — low cloud over hills, a strip of town across the middle, and the sea barely separable from the sky.
A wide panoramic format, almost entirely horizontal. The town band sits just below centre and is the only busy passage; everything above and below it is quiet by design.
Dove, lavender and pale cerulean through the sky and sea, with the town in sage, olive and taupe. One stroke of vermilion on a roof is the only saturated colour.
Short horizontal strokes throughout, laid in ranks and shifting value from touch to touch. The town is dabbed in smaller, denser marks; nothing is drawn.
Gouache on paper — the Winsor & Newton tubes are in the photograph. Matte and opaque, with a torn lower edge.
Lower left, raypatrick, in red over the land, letters touching.
