Royce and Mersh on the beach
Royce and Mersh walking up a beach side by side, both armed. Royce is at the left in an orange shirt and a ball cap, flexing one arm; Mersh is in a pink shirt with his dark glasses, a cigarette and a turquoise pendant, a gun held down at his thigh. Cats trot along at their feet, women lark about in the surf behind them, and the Juicy Hippo truck sits at the far left.
The two men advance straight out of the picture plane, filling the centre from top to bottom, while everything else — truck, swimmers, cats — is pushed to the margins behind them. A palm leans in from the upper left to close the corner.
Orange and hot pink in the shirts against a broad field of sky blue and turquoise, with the sand in warm ochre. The two men carry nearly all of the warm colour between them.
Firm ink contour with the colour laid in flat and bright, barely blended. The sea and sky are brushed in broad horizontal strokes and the figures are left unmodelled, so they read as cut out and set down on the beach.
Watercolour over ink on sketchbook paper.
