Portraits — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

Six watercolour figure studies across a sketchbook spread — a woman sitting on a beach in red, a woman seen from behind in a swimsuit, one in a white shirt by the sea, a head in violet against green, a street seen from above, and a figure in a red patterned wrap.
A clean grid of six boxes, three to a page. Every study places a single figure against a flat landscape or city ground, and in four of the six the figure is seen from behind — the page is a study of backs.
Sienna and umber flesh against grounds of emerald, cobalt and bone. The violet head at the lower left is the exception and is painted almost entirely in plum and lilac against a chartreuse field.
Washed in quickly over faint pencil, with the figures built from a few modelled strokes and the grounds laid flat behind them. The street study is the only one drawn into with a fine brush.
Watercolour in a spiral-bound sketchbook, six studies on one spread, dated. A studio photograph of a page rather than a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
