Portraits — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

A woman's head in three-quarter profile, hair drawn back dark, a blue stone at her ear and a frill at her collar, against a patch of broken colour.
The head fills the sheet and is cropped at the crown and the shoulder. The ground behind is painted only on the left, as a loose rectangle of colour, and stops abruptly — the right side is bare paper.
Sienna, rose and umber through the face with violet in the shadows. The hair is a dense blue-black; the ground behind runs teal, olive and rust.
Built in small overlapping facets of transparent colour, each with a hard dried edge, so the face reads as faceted rather than modelled. The pen line goes over the top and corrects nothing.
Watercolour with pen and ink in a sketchbook.
No signature visible within the drawn area.
