Portraits — pencil drawing by Ray Patrick

A graphite portrait of a woman in profile, hair falling dark and full behind her, looking out to the left.
The head and shoulder fill the sheet and are cropped at the crown and the breast. The mass of hair occupies the whole right half and is far larger than the face, which is what gives the drawing its weight.
Graphite on cream paper, worked to a dense charcoal in the hair and left as untouched sheet along the forehead, nose and chin.
The hair is hatched in long sweeping strokes that follow its fall and are never rubbed out into flat tone, while the face is modelled softly. The one pearl earring is the sharpest mark on the sheet.
Graphite on paper, annotated and timed in pencil at the top.
No signature visible within the drawn area.
