Portraits — pencil drawing by Ray Patrick

Two graphite portrait studies on overlapping sheets — a woman at the left looking up and out, and a second at the right in profile with her hair falling dark behind her.
The two sheets overlap with the right-hand study larger and closer. Both are cropped at the shoulder and set against open paper; the profile is turned away from the viewer and the frontal head looks straight past the camera.
Graphite on a warm cream paper, worked from a dense black in the hair to bare sheet along the lit cheek and collar. No ground is laid behind either head.
Rubbed and blended in the flesh, with the hair cut in as one dark mass and the collar left as little more than a contour. The lights are lifted back out rather than reserved.
Graphite on paper, two studies on separate sheets, annotated in pencil. A studio photograph of drawings with the pencils used, not a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
