Portraits — pencil drawing by Ray Patrick

Two graphite head studies — a large one at the left blocked in as flat planes, and a finished portrait of a young woman at the right, turned and looking out of the sheet.
The unfinished head is cropped by the left edge and takes two thirds of the sheet; the finished one is smaller and sits at the right, so the drawing is read as a construction and its outcome side by side.
Graphite on white, carried from a dense black in the hair to bare paper on the lit cheek, with a broad mid-grey covering the ground between the two heads.
Everything is built from flat angular planes laid with the side of the lead and left hard-edged; only in the finished head are the edges softened, and only where the light actually turns.
Graphite on paper, two studies, dated in pencil at the lower right. A studio photograph of a sheet of studies rather than a single picture.
No signature visible within the drawn area.
