Portraits — pencil drawing by Ray Patrick

A graphite study of a man's head in sharp profile, lit from the front so the whole far side falls into shadow, with the ear modelled in full light.
The head fills the sheet and is cropped at the crown and the shoulder. The profile line runs down the left edge as a single continuous contour and everything to the right of it is tone.
Graphite on white, carried to a dense charcoal across the shadow side and left as bare paper along the brow, nose and lip. The ear is the brightest passage in the drawing.
Built from fine parallel hatching laid at a consistent angle, worked up in layers rather than rubbed, so the tone stays granular and the paper keeps showing through it.
Graphite on paper.
No signature visible within the drawn area.
