Subject

Three graphite head studies on one sheet — a bald man in profile at the left, a second full face at the centre, and a third at the right tipped back and broken into hard planes.

Composition

The three run left to right at increasing scale and decreasing finish, so the sheet is read as a sequence. The right-hand head is the largest and the least resolved, and the ruled construction box around it is still showing.

Palette

Graphite on white throughout, worked to a mid-grey rather than black. There is no deep dark anywhere on the sheet.

Handling

The left and centre studies are modelled smoothly with the lights left bare; the right is blocked out in flat chips of shadow with hard edges. One sitter, three degrees of resolution.

Medium and support

Graphite on paper, three studies, annotated and dated in pencil at the top. A studio photograph of a sheet of drawings rather than a single picture.

Signature

No signature legible at this scale.
