Portraits — pencil drawing by Ray Patrick

A graphite study of a young woman seen in profile, shoulders bare, with a small oil landscape panel propped at the right edge of the frame.
The head and shoulders fill the sheet and are cropped at the crown and the breast. The drawing is lit hard from the left so the far side of the face is lost entirely into the ground behind it.
Graphite on white, carried to a dense grey across the whole ground with the lights cut back to bare paper along the brow, nose and collarbone.
The ground is rubbed smooth and the figure found by lifting the lights out of it, so the drawing has almost no visible line — only the construction marks at the shoulder are left showing.
Graphite on paper. A studio photograph with a small oil panel beside it, which is a separate work.
No signature visible within the drawn area.
