Portraits — pencil drawing by Ray Patrick

Two graphite portrait studies on one sheet, back to back — a woman in profile looking left, and a man in profile looking right, each lit from the front.
The two heads face away from one another across the centre of the sheet, both cropped at the shoulder, with the space between them left bare. The symmetry is deliberate and is the whole structure of the page.
Graphite on cream paper, from a dense black in both heads of hair down to untouched sheet along the brow, nose and lip. The grounds are left blank.
Modelled smoothly in rubbed tone with the edges of the face kept soft and only the eye, nostril and lip drawn sharply. The hair in both is one dark mass with the light cut back into it.
Graphite on paper, two studies on one sheet, annotated and timed in pencil. A studio photograph of a sheet of drawings rather than a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
