Portraits — pencil drawing by Ray Patrick

A graphite study of a head seen close and from below, three-quarters turned, built almost entirely from flat planes of shadow.
The head is cropped at every edge and tipped back so the underside of the nose, the lip and the jaw carry the drawing. There is no neck, no shoulder and no ground — only the face.
Graphite on white, from a dense black along the jaw and the hair to bare paper on the cheekbone and the bridge of the nose.
Hatched in short strokes laid in different directions for each plane, so the form is read by the change of direction rather than by a change of tone. Nothing is rubbed or blended.
Graphite on paper.
No signature visible within the drawn area.
