Subject

Two graphite studies of a young woman — one in profile at the right, fully worked, and a second at the left turned toward the viewer and cropped by the edge of the sheet.

Composition

The two heads are set close and face in different directions, the profile looking out of the page to the left and the frontal one looking down. The sheet is cropped tight so neither head is whole.

Palette

Graphite on white, from a dense black in the hair to bare paper along the forehead, nose and upper lip. The ground is left untouched.

Handling

Hatched in short strokes laid across the form, with the hair cut in as one dark mass and the edge of the cheek carried by the paper rather than by a line. The construction marks remain visible around both heads.

Medium and support

Graphite on paper, two studies on one sheet.

Signature

No signature visible within the drawn area.
