Portraits — pencil drawing by Ray Patrick

Two graphite portrait studies of a young man on one sheet — the head at the right fully worked, the one at the left blocked in and abandoned.
The two heads face one another across the sheet. The finished one is cropped at the shoulder and lit hard from the right; the unfinished one is larger, closer and reads as a field of shadow shapes rather than a face.
Graphite on white, carried from a dense black in the hair and the cast shadow to bare paper along the lit cheek and brow.
Blocked in with the side of the lead in flat angular planes, then sharpened only where the light turns — the eye, the nostril, the lip. The construction lines are left showing all round the head.
Graphite on paper, two studies, with pencilled dates below each. A studio photograph of a sheet of studies rather than a single picture.
No signature visible within the drawn area.
