Subject

A sheet of two graphite head studies on a table, with a spiral sketchbook of pen figure drawings laid open across it at an angle.

Composition

The two heads run down the right of the sheet, each cropped at the shoulder and tipped back. The sketchbook cuts in from the left on a diagonal and covers the lower corner, so the two kinds of drawing are set directly against one another.

Palette

Graphite on white in the heads, worked from near-black to bare paper. The sketchbook is pure line — black pen on white with no tone at all.

Handling

The heads are built in soft rubbed planes with the lights lifted out; the pen figures beside them are the opposite, fast closed contour with hatching used only in the hair. Two methods photographed side by side.

Medium and support

Graphite on paper and pen and ink in a spiral-bound sketchbook. A studio photograph of several works, not a single picture.

Signature

No signature legible at this scale.
