Pipeline seen from the beach

The North Shore at Pipeline seen from the beach, a heavy sky over a dark line of swell, with figures and boards scattered along the sand.
Four horizontal registers — sky, outer water, the dark band of the reef break, and the beach — with the sky taking the upper half. Nothing rises above the horizon; the whole picture is bands.
Cerulean, teal and slate through the sky with the paper left white for the cloud breaks. The break is a deep ultramarine-violet, the sand a flat ochre, with a few flecks of vermilion among the figures.
Broad transparent washes dropped in wet so the cloud shapes bleed into one another, against the band of the break, which is one unbroken loaded pull straight across the sheet. The figures are single dark touches.
Watercolour on paper. Transparent throughout, with wide unpainted margins.
Lower right, raypatrick, in brown over the sand, with pipeline Hi inscribed beneath it.
