pencil drawing by Ray Patrick

Four studies on one sheet — a standing female nude from behind, the same model frontal against a dark ground, a classical bust, and a draped shoulder blocked in as planes.
The two full figures take the left two thirds at full height; the bust and the drapery study are stacked in a column at the right at half the scale. The sheet reads as a working page, not a composition.
Graphite on white. The centre figure is set against a dense charcoal ground worked right up to her contour; the other three are left open on bare paper.
The figures are modelled in flat faceted planes with the lights left as paper, and the centre one is carved out of its ground rather than drawn onto it. The bust at the right is pure construction, barely toned.
Graphite on paper, four studies, dated in pencil beside each. A studio photograph of a sheet of studies with the pencils and brushes used, not a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
