Paperwork
Mersh at his desk working through a document with a cigarette in his mouth, while behind him a woman in curlers shouts over his shoulder and three dancers in green bow ties push into the room. A tumbler and a blister pack of pills sit at his elbow.
Mersh is low and foreground, bent over the desk and facing away from everything happening above and behind him. The commotion is stacked in a band across the upper half, which puts the noise literally over his head.
Warm umber and tan through the desk and his jumper against acid green behind, with the bow ties repeating that green as small accents. The shouting woman's lilac hair is the only cool note in the upper half.
Ink line with washes kept inside it, the background figures given less line and less colour than the foreground so they recede. The document is left as bare paper with ruled strokes for text.
Watercolour and ink on paper.
No signature within the painted area.
