Out the front door

A MershNoir study. A heavy man comes down a flight of steps at speed, firing back over his shoulder at the doorway he has just left, a second pistol still in his waistband and a cigarette in his teeth.
The figure is caught mid-stride on a diagonal running down to the left, with the doorway and its fanlight drawn square behind him. The architecture is upright and the man is not, which is where the movement comes from.
Warm tan and sienna through the coat against the plum, rose and cold blue of the doorway, with the steps in violet.
Quick ink contour with washes dropped in and left unblended; the smoke is drawn as a white reserve rather than painted. The figure is cut out and sits on bare paper at the edges.
Watercolour and ink in a sketchbook.
No signature visible; the sheet is sketchbook work.
