MershNoir in the alley
Mersh in an orange jacket standing in a dark doorway with a cat held against his chest, looking down a narrow alley toward a bright strip of sky and the lit street beyond. A single small figure is walking away at the far end.
An upright sheet split down the middle: black doorway and the back of his head filling the left, the alley running away in the right half to a pale aperture at the top. He is turned away from the viewer entirely, so the alley is the subject and he is the frame.
Hot orange in the jacket against black, with the alley in turquoise, violet and gold. The warm and cold halves meet along his shoulder.
Solid black brushed in as flat masses with the washes dropped into the lit channel between them. The buildings are drawn with the brush tip at speed; the cat is barely more than two strokes.
Watercolour and ink on paper.
No signature within the painted area.
