A long-haired man in a very wide white hat smoking a cigar, seen in profile, with a second small hat floating above him and a hatband of silver conchos.
The hat brim cuts the picture almost corner to corner as a single white sweep, and the head sits beneath it. A flat yellow panel closes the right half and the smaller hat sits alone at the upper left.
Viridian and emerald through the face, hair and coat against a flat cadmium yellow ground, with vermilion in the hatband and the cigar. The brim is left as bare paper and is the brightest thing in the picture.
Pen line first and fast, the hair and beard built from drawn parallel strokes with the white of the sheet showing between them. The washes are dropped inside the line and allowed to pool; nothing is corrected.
